The city has no direct access to the ocean, but the river Kent passes through the city and connects it to the coast, providing access to shipping. Highgate was built in old Tiberian times, the settlement growing around a bridge that was once the only way of crossing the Kent for several days' travel in either direction. It grew into the main hub for Tiberian activity in Pereth, and it was fortified extensively before the Tiberian Empire fell. Many of the old fortifications are still standing.
